Step 10
The Chalon castle
(The Pearl of Jura)
The medieval fortress built by the founding lord of the city, Jean de Chalon, in the middle of the 13th century was replaced by a magnificent Renaissance palace by his successor Louis de Chalon-Arlay Prince of Orange, known as the Magnificent. The castle and the city have lived through hours of glory, including the famous tournament given here by Philibert de Chalon-Arlay in 1519 in honor of his nomination as Knight of the toison d’or.
After the lords left in 1530 for the United Provinces (now the Netherlands), it nevertheless continued to be inhabited for operational needs by the Montrichard family. It also suffered damage during the wars of conquest, the 10 years war and especially after the fire of 1815. Today the historical association, the « amis du vieux pays de Nozeroy » is concerned with stabilizing the ruins of castle. Around ten volunteers carry out numerous actions there to promote this heritage thanks to community grants.
