Step 11
The collégiale church
of Monsieur Saint-Antoine
de Nozeroy.
Built at the beginning of the 15th century, following the creation of the collegial chapter of Nozeroy by Jean III de Chalon-Arlay, prince of Orange and his wife Marie des Baux, it extends the old chapel of the Nozeroy hospital in direction of the ramparts and, as it is part of the ramparts, it does not face east. It housed a college of 6 canons headed by a dean who celebrated many Masses there with great pomp and solemnity. Consecrated at the end of the 15th century, it symbolizes the domination of the lords of Chalon, the canon chapter having taken over the church of Mièges.
Clocher
The high bell tower represented by Gilbert Cousin, was destroyed after the fire of the city on July 15, 1815, it was not rebuilt identically for lack of money and was restored in 1997 following a subscription. The church has a nave of three spans without a transept, with ribbed crossings. It contains many statues, stalls and paintings and in particular wheat straw embroidery made in the 17th century by the local Annonciades Célestes nuns. Just before the harmonium, notice a stone statue of the Virgin crowned with scepter and the baby Jesus holding a phylactery : it is said to represent the beatified Blessed Louise de Savoie, lord of Nozeroy. Go to his chapel to the left of the choir, you will see his relics there.
Explanations: Chapter: meeting of canons
